Yellow Suit Diver

Yellow Suit Diver 2006 Color aquatint etching Somerset velvet white paper Image size 21" x 21" Paper size 32" x 31¼" Edition of 50 Purchase/Inquire Artist Isca Greenfield-Sanders collects and reworks photographs as part of her process. She uses images found in discarded family photo collections, selecting the part of each image that contains the most intriguing formal properties. Using modern technologies, she transfers the photographic image onto rice paper so it can serve as the foundation for a painting. At Paulson Press, she worked with a photographic key plate to achieve the same purpose with her prints. Ultimately, Greenfield-Sanders obliterates the actual photo image with paints and inks to uncover the found images’ essential meaning and beauty. “The Swimming Pool Etchings” combine centuries old techniques of painting and intaglio printing with late 20th-century photography and 21st century [...]

Bright Beach

Bright Beach 2009 Direct to plate photogravure and aquatint Somerset textured white paper Image size 27" x 27" Paper size 37½" x 36" Edition of 50 Purchase/Inquire Isca Greenfield-Sanders makes images of refracted light and subjects just out of reach. She is not afraid of combining beauty with a sense of the ominous that may be just outside the viewer’s frame. Indeed, she celebrates the ambiguous. These long beach scenes and parachutists conjure up dreams of nearly forgotten family holidays and war heroes. Her images come from discarded family photographs and slides that she purchases secondhand. This 2008 group of prints also shares a sensibility with Japanese water colors. They were made with a new process developed by Paulson Press and Magnolia Editions called directto-plate photogravure. Q: Let’s talk about the new images. Where are they coming from? [...]

Wader I (Blue) 2012 Direct to plate photogravure and aquatint Somerset white paper Image size 21" x 21" Paper size 31½" x 31½" Edition of 50 Purchase/Inquire   Isca Greenfield-Sanders uses discarded slides as her source imagery. They are the evidence of stories, now forgotten, but given another life through her art. The narrative is not prescriptive but wide open. Sometimes she recasts the image as if some of the color had been washed away. Other times she intentionally repeats a flaw because there are treasures to be found in the castoff of the castoff. In the digital age, everyone is a photographer, and the mistakes are deleted before they can even be filed away. In her work, Greenfield-Sanders repurposes the quotidian into something deeply memorable. Paulson Bott Press: You determine some of the basic images before [...]

One image taken in 1961 at the Jersey shore has provided her inspiration for several paintings and three new prints with Paulson Bott Press. As she focuses her attention closer and closer the image moves from a dreamy memory to an abstract dream. –Kenneth Caldwell Paulson Bott Press: Where did the images for these prints come from? IGS: All three etchings are based on one slide taken in 1961 at the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey. The original slide is bright and packed with figures – I fell for it immediately. I have made more than 10 oil paintings/studies, [...]
