Convertible

Convertible 2019 Color spitbite aquatint, aquatint with drypoint. Paper Size: 32” x 32” Edition of 35 Purchase/Inquire For her fifth project with the press, Isca Greenfield-Sanders continues her rich dialogue between photography and painting. Her three new prints, Convertible, Pink Mountain, and Tree Tunnel, are all landscapes depicting roads below her signature horizon line. The road is a perfect means to explore her ongoing examination of photography and its relationship to the American mythos. When we engage with themes of the road, we are led to thoughts of the road west, the human drive to move to somewhere better, the promised land, leisure, escape, the past and the future. It makes me think of Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road” and its record-holding time at the top of the music charts. The collective nostalgia for that path or way “home” struck [...]

Yellow Suit Diver

Yellow Suit Diver 2006 Color aquatint etching Somerset velvet white paper Image size 21" x 21" Paper size 32" x 31¼" Edition of 50 Purchase/Inquire Artist Isca Greenfield-Sanders collects and reworks photographs as part of her process. She uses images found in discarded family photo collections, selecting the part of each image that contains the most intriguing formal properties. Using modern technologies, she transfers the photographic image onto rice paper so it can serve as the foundation for a painting. At Paulson Press, she worked with a photographic key plate to achieve the same purpose with her prints. Ultimately, Greenfield-Sanders obliterates the actual photo image with paints and inks to uncover the found images’ essential meaning and beauty. Bright Beach 2009 Direct to plate photogravure and aquatint Somerset textured white paper Image size 27" x 27" Paper size 37½" x 36" Edition of 50 Purchase/Inquire Isca Greenfield-Sanders makes images of refracted light and subjects just out of reach. She is not afraid of combining beauty with a sense of the ominous that may be just outside the viewer’s frame. Indeed, she celebrates the ambiguous. These long beach scenes and parachutists conjure up dreams of nearly forgotten family holidays and war heroes. Her images come from discarded family photographs and slides that she purchases secondhand. This 2008 group of prints also shares a sensibility with Japanese water colors. They were made with a new process developed by Paulson Press and Magnolia Editions called directto-plate photogravure. Q: Let’s talk about the new images. Where are they coming from? [read [...]
